Why VIACTIV D ..............
Why D

Ongoing research suggests the importance of vitamin D for many possible health benefits. Many experts are now recommending daily intakes of up to 1,000 IU per day – more than twice the previous recommendations. Research shows that the majority of Americans are not getting adequate vitamin D in their daily diet to support these higher levels. That’s why we’ve increased the vitamin D in every VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew to 125% of the Daily Value!

Vitamin D can be obtained from three sources.

Why D
The Sun stimulates the body to make vitamin D. However, many people are limiting their exposure to the sun and as a result, limiting the body’s production of vitamin D.

Food like eggs, some dairy products, fatty fish and certain fortified foods contain vitamin D, but it may be difficult to meet the higher vitamin D levels that are now being recommended, from foods alone.

Supplements, like VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chews, are a delicious and convenient way to help get the recommended daily amount of vitamin D and calcium we need.

Are You at Risk for Vitamin D Deficiency?

Getting adequate vitamin D from your diet is essential for strong bones and optimal health. You may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency if you:

  • Spend limited time in the sun
  • Consistently wear sunscreen with SPF 8 or higher
  • Live in higher latitudes
  • Are an adult aged 50 or older
  • Have dark skin

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that people with any of the above risk factors consume extra vitamin D from fortified foods and/or supplements. The best way to know if you are getting enough vitamin D is to ask your doctor to order a test to check your blood levels.

Vitamin D: For Strong and Healthy Bones

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends getting adequate calcium and vitamin D on a daily basis as a key step in developing and maintaining healthy bones. Recently, higher levels of vitamin D have been shown to have an important impact on bone health. Learn more about the NOF Recommendations for Vitamin D here.

Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is available in two forms: D2 and D3. VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chews contain vitamin D3. Both forms raise vitamin D levels in the blood, however some research indicates that vitamin D3 may be more effective in raising and maintaining vitamin D levels long term.

†Vitamin D is being investigated for breast health benefits. While no medical
consensus yet exists, emerging science suggests there may be a correlation
between adequate levels of vitamin D and breast health.*
More research is needed.
