vitamin D and exercise are critical to maintaining
everyday bone health and preventing osteoporosis
|
|
|
|
The report includes recommendations on what Americans
can do
to help decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis. These
recommendations include:
|
|
- Getting adequate amounts of
calcium
and vitamin
D.
- For individuals who are not getting enough calcium and
vitamin D in their diets, supplements may be helpful. Learn

activities to improve strength and
balance.

The Surgeon General's report is a call for Americans
to take
action to improve and maintain healthy bones. According to the
National Osteoporosis Foundation, in the U.S. today, 10 million
individuals are estimated to already have osteoporosis and
almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass,
placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis.¹

Brand research on calcium
underscores Surgeon General's Report with
surprising facts...

Women are still struggling to get adequate calcium
to
maintain strong, healthy bones
|
|
According to research conducted by the VIACTIV®
Brand from
March through May 2004, only 30% of women feel they get the
appropriate amount of calcium everyday². Other startling
statistics include:
|
|
- Only 23% of women are aware of the daily requirement of calcium (1000
to 1200 mg/day)
- Women claim to pay attention to tracking calcium. However, there are nearly
2 to 4 days per week where they don't know if they've had adequate amounts
of calcium
- Only 34% of women pay attention to the calcium content on Nutrition Facts
(or nutrition) labeling
