About VIACTIV
What is the source of the calcium in VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews and how well is it absorbed?
Each VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chew delivers 500 mg of elemental calcium through calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate is nature's most concentrated source of calcium. The calcium in VIACTIV has been clinically demonstrated to be absorbed as well as the calcium from milk. VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews are best absorbed when chewed thoroughly and consumed with food or on a full stomach. With VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews, there's no tablet that needs to disintegrate and no unpleasant chalky taste -- just a great tasting chew designed to help keep bones healthy and strong.

How much vitamin D and vitamin K are present in VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews?

Can VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews help prevent osteoporosis?
Inadequate calcium intake is an important factor that contributes to the development of osteoporosis. There are no guarantees that adequate calcium will prevent osteoporosis; but given the importance of calcium to bone health, it just makes good sense to be sure you're getting the recommended amounts in your diet. And if you're not getting adequate calcium from food, VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews can help make up the difference. (As little as one chew per day may be all you need to achieve the recommended intake.) It's important to understand that recommendations for calcium intake are set at levels that are intended to result in "maximal calcium retention." The government panel of scientists that developed the new recommendations believed that the achievement of maximal calcium retention offered individuals their best hope of reducing the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures.

If I already have osteoporosis, can this product help me?
Yes. While calcium cannot cure osteoporosis or bone disease, it can help your body rebuild or maintain its calcium stores, thus slowing the pace at which you lose additional bone mass.

Where can I find this product in stores?
Look for VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews in the vitamin and mineral section -- where you would find other calcium supplements -- in grocery, drug and superstores.

Can smoking or alcohol consumption make this product less effective?
Neither activity will directly interfere with the benefits of calcium supplementation, but both smoking and excessive alcohol use increase the risk of osteoporosis. This increased risk makes it prudent for individuals who smoke or consume alcohol to make sure their calcium intake is adequate.

Taking VIACTIV
How many VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews should I take each day?
See Recommended Calcium Intakes for age-specific requirements. Your total dietary calcium requirements depend on a variety of factors including your age. If you're getting very little calcium from your diet, two to three chews can provide your recommended daily calcium intake. If you're consuming some calcium-rich foods, you may need as little as one chew per day.

Does it matter what time of day VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews are taken?
No. You can take them at any time of the day you wish. However, the calcium (from calcium carbonate) in VIACTIV is better absorbed when taken with food or on a full stomach.

What if I'm also taking an iron supplement?
Calcium can interfere with the absorption of iron, so if you are taking an iron supplement as well, it's best to take the two products at different times of the day.

Are there any medications or supplements that could be affected by my use of this product?
If you're taking prescription medications, you should check with your pharmacist because some drugs such as antibiotics are not recommended to be taken with calcium. Also, if you're taking a coumarin-type oral anticoagulant (e.g., warfarin, *Coumadin® or dicumerol), you should check with your doctor because supplemental vitamin K may affect the level of anticoagulation.

*Coumadin® is a trademark of DuPont Pharmaceuticals Company

If I'm already taking a vitamin and/or mineral supplement, can I still take VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews?
Many vitamin and mineral supplements only contain a small amount of calcium; however, check the label for the amount. Most women need 1000 - 1300 mg daily, depending on age. There is no added benefit from taking more than 2000 mg of calcium per day. If you're taking a supplement that includes iron, you may want to take VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews at a different time of the day.

Can I take this supplement if I am suffering from a serious medical condition or disease such as high blood pressure or heart disease?
In any situation in which supplemental calcium may be beneficial, we would expect VIACTIV Soft Calcium Chews to be similarly beneficial. It is important, however, to discuss calcium supplementation with your physician to make sure it is appropriate for you. Also, it is not advisable to take more than the recommended amount of calcium, as there is no additional benefit from taking more than 2000 mg of calcium per day. Excessively high intake may cause constipation, and some people may have increased risk of kidney stone formation with high intakes. People taking an anticoagulant drug should be aware that this product contains vitamin K.

Can I use this product if I'm lactose intolerant?
Each piece contains less than 0.5 mg of lactose, an insignificant amount for individuals who are lactose intolerant. However, if you have a condition called "galactosemia," you should not use this product without asking your doctor. If you have additional questions related to certain conditions, call us toll-free at 1-877-VIACTIV.

Do I need to use this product if I'm taking estrogen replacement therapy or another treatment for osteoporosis?
Calcium supplements are often recommended to be taken in conjunction with hormone replacement therapy or other medications prescribed for osteoporosis. Regardless of whether you're taking other measures to offset or prevent the effects of osteoporosis, your body still needs calcium. If you're not getting enough of it from the foods you eat, supplementation can be an additional source.

Is it true that my bones are losing calcium every day?
Yes, this is part of the way the body's calcium balance works. Every day, your bones lose calcium regardless of whether you're getting it from your diet. This calcium must be replaced in order to help keep your bones at their strongest and healthiest.

Does increased calcium intake help build bones or just prevent further bone loss?
Both. Increased calcium intake helps build bones by providing calcium for deposit into bone tissue and it also helps to prevent further bone loss. Bone is subject to constant turnover, both tearing down and rebuilding tissue, throughout life. During the bone-forming years, the rate of bone formation exceeds that of bone degradation, provided adequate calcium and good nutrition are available during this time of growth. As a body matures, hormonal changes take place whereby the tearing down and rebuilding processes are maintained at approximately the same pace. With time, however, the rate of degradation may exceed the rate of new bone formation, leading to bone loss. This is particularly true in postmenopausal women who are not receiving hormone replacement therapy because estrogen plays an important role in regulating this balance. When hormonal changes cause bone degradation to exceed formation, extra calcium is needed to help maintain an appropriate balance in the bone formation process.
